Istikharah.

Tadi aku jumpa Dr Md Noor Sundari, Consultant Orthopaedic KMC untuk discuss result MRI yang aku buat dua hari lepas.

Dr Md Noor cakap, bengkak disk L4-L5 aku dah protruding, no longer bulging. Basically, dah agak teruk la tu. Beliau recommend operation untuk potong bahagian yang bengkak tu.

Beliau suruh balik rumah, consider betul-betul, bincang dengan bini tersayang dan family, dan beri jawapan dalam masa dua minggu.

So, nak operate ke tak ek?

Hadu...

p/s: Selamat hari ulangtahun kelahiran yang ke 26 buat bini tersayang. Thanks for everything...

Please be sure what kind of operation the doc will be doing.

There are 2 kinds:

1) insert metal into your back, this is non-reversible and you will have problems for the rest of your life.

2) removal of a small amount of disc that is impinging on your nerve. The problem with this procedure is that it creates instability throughout your backbone, and if you do not take care of your back, the same problem can reoccur, sometimes at different sites, eg at L5/S1.

My advice is to get a 2nd opinion and start off with conservative treatment, that is a lot of bedrest and physiotherapy. 1 week is not enough, you should try at least a month. Besides, Petronas allocates 3 months of mc anyway. What better way to stay close to your family. Don't rush into surgery because once you go into it, there is no turning back. My husband went through it 3 times, the third being the last straw. Our surgeon said that 90% of slipped discs get better over time with proper rest and physiotherapy.

If you have any questions about the surgery, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are in Kuantan anyway.

flo: thanks. :)

akak KKL: thanks for the advise.

it is the second procedure - to remove a portion of the herniatted disk. no insertion of metal involved.

actually, my L5/S1 and L3/L4 are also bulging. L4/L5 is worse, it's no longer just a simple bulging, but protruding, leaving no visible gap from the spine and the spinal cord (in the mri).

according to dr md noor (consultant orthopedic), my case falls within the 10% group which conservative treatment may not cure completely or will take longer time (one to two years) to heal.

i'll still have until monday to consider. but so far, i've decided to go on with the surgery, and i'm aware of the pros and cons and risks involved.

pray for me :)

My husband advises that you try the laporoscope technique, performed by Dr. Malik at Damansara Specialist Hospital. The procedure is minimally invasive, and you can start walking within a few hours of the surgery. No need to put in a catheter or drip line. The most exciting thing about this procedure is that you will be fully awake and conscious the entire time. What's more, you can even have a dvd copy of your surgery should you desire to relive the experience. This was the procedure done on An-war Ebrahim several years ago at the Alpha Klinik in Germany.
